Empowering girls

Girls miss up to 20% of their education because they are forced to stay at home during their menstruation. Those who lack access to clean water and cannot afford sanitary products are those who suffer the most..

Sanitation facilities

The main problems resulting in school absenteeism are deficient latrines & water supply; no access to sanitary products as well as the insufficient support from teachers and parents.

Masakhane combined school, located in Mpumalanga hosts 161 school girls between the ages of 9-15 years (Grade 4 – 9)

Topics we address in our training:

  • Puberty

  • Menstruation

  • Safe and consensual sex

  • Contraception

  • HIV/Aids

  • STDs/STIs

During the training, we give each girl an Elle Cup pack and teach them how to use it (even if they have not reached menarche).

It is important to start addressing these topics prior to menstrual age to ensure the girls are equipped and understand the function of a menstrual period.

This is necessary to continue to process of destigmatisation around menstruation.
